Beliefs, Self-limiting Behaviour and Assumptions
Beliefs develop as a result of our experiences or observations & we act as if they are true. This is not always the case, we can challenge, influence and change them. We can lose the unhelpful beliefs and develop beliefs that help us become more positive and grow. You can create change in your beliefs to help you grow as a player, coach or as a person.
Whether your beliefs are related to your game performance, your training regime, your school or work life, or even relating to yourself, you can influence them. Practice the below and notice where you can interrupt negative patterns of thinking. Write down each of the below:
- The belief: take the negative or limiting belief; or yourself, others or an event and acknowledge it by writing it down
- Effects the belief causes: notice and log what impact it has on you, your basketball game, your day in work or school, your family or your social life
- Responses the belief creates: notice and log your feelings and emotions, the impact on your physical health, your productivity, your diet, your exercise and your motivation for every action
- Results of the belief: notice and log the behaviour that follows. Is it anger, sadness, lethargy, avoidance, falling out with friends or family, altercations with your sports coach or your colleagues
- The final outcome: notice and log down the end scenario, the consequences of this belief. Is it disregard for yourself or others, lack of confidence and self-belief, disconnect from your teammates and a broken exercise and nutrition regime?
Finally, by becoming mindful of our beliefs and the consequences, we can start to break the cycle. Consequently, replacing these with proactive, helpful and positive beliefs about ourselves, others and the world we are living in. Ultimately, this can only have a beneficial impact on your game…both on and off the court. Start today and create some change.
