Consistently Working on Development Areas
As a coach and also as a physio, I am keen to empower players to work on their development areas, this will increase players confidence in their ability to work on the areas that will complement their existing strengths. a bugbear of mine is when a player continuously works on things they are already good at. They don’t want to work on weaknesses as it is hard, challenging but probably because it is frustrating for them. Players can find it difficult to work on areas that are less favoured and need developing because it can be challenging or daunting.
The most successful players will use a growth mindset and think of these challenges as an opportunity to grow.
“Failure is an opportunity to grow!” By experiencing failure, we can learn how to succeed.
Most players will know what they struggle with or know their weaknesses. However, they might not know how to problem-solve or even know where to start. Taking time to sit down and write out what they perceive to be their weakness as a problem and then coming up with solutions can be a great strategy to improve.
Then the key to progression is to consistently work on development areas to turn these into strengths.
Now is the perfect time to progress before the next season.
For players: Use the player’s sheet below
For Coaches: You can point your players in the direction of the player sheet or you can utilise the coach’s sheet. Fill it out for each of you players and send it to them so they can reflect on your feedback and together work to identify areas for development.
